KUALA LUMPUR: Datuk Sharifah Aini Syed Jaafar is best remembered for her melodious voice and her signature tunes that have tugged at the heartstrings of music fans from all walks of life.
Fans of this songstress would recall her memorable renditions of the haunting Seri Dewi Malam’ and ‘Hapuslah Airmatamu’.
Born in Johor Baru to Syed Jaafar Syed Sahil and Sharifah Noor Syed Ahmad Al-Attas, Sharifah Aini or fondly known as Kak Pah was raised by her grandparents at Kampung Majidee.
Her singing talents was first discovered after she won a singing competition in Singapore called Bintang RTS in 1968, where she amazed judges with her beautiful rendition of 'Tiga Malam'.
In 1969, she signed a singing contract with recording company, EMI and continued to stay with them for 38 years.
Sharifah Aini's debut album titled, "Seri Dewi Malam" became an instant hit and received recognition from music critics in Malaysia, Singapore and Brunei.
Her legacy remains evergreen, and the kind-hearted and good-natured as well as dedicated artiste will be fondly remembered by her fans.
After she has carved a name as a singer, Sharifah also made a name as an in various films including 'Hapuslah Airmatamu', 'Sumber Ilhamku' and 'Bintang Pujaan'.
In 2003, Sharifah Aini who is the second artiste to receive the rare title of Biduanita Negara after Saloma, was honoured with the Panglima Jasa Negara award which carries the title "Datuk" for her vast contribution to the country's music indutry.
She was regarded one of the pioneers who had made the country proud with her perseverance and persistent and successfully collaborated with some of the country's heavyweights including Sudirman Arshad, Latiff Ibrahim as well as Indonesia's Broery Marantika.
Throughout her singing career, she recorded a whopping 93 albums including seven English albums.
